Can a "Work Away from Home" Mom Homeschool?

Community Question is a category inspired by you. Here and there readers write in with questions that are better served by the varied, experiential knowledge of those who read and contribute in the comments. Please respond to this post in the comments, but if you have a question for the community email it to Heather.

The following question is from Rebecca D

“I have never homeschooled however it is something that fascinates me. I keep reading and learning about it and the more I read about it, the more I feel like it is something that I would love to do. I really wish I knew more about this years ago, my oldest is in college and the next oldest is a senior in high school, a little late for them.

Unfortunately, I was a single mom for most of their school years and had to work to support my family. I do have a 5th grader who I feel would benefit from homeschooling. She has been struggling in public schools because of her ADHD. She is getting increasingly frustrated because as I’m sure you are aware ADHD and a large classroom setting are not a good mix. However, I work full time and have no idea how I would go about homeschooling her.

I remarried, and my husband recently went back and got his degree after having lost his job due to a serious injury. He is pretty much a new college grad with an entry level job, large student loan debt plus child support payments so I am the breadwinner for now. We are working on getting to the point where I can be home more, but that won’t happen overnight. Hubby works from home one day a week and can help out on those days. I work at a large financial institution M-F, 8-5, my commute is up to an hour one way depending on traffic.

I do have the opportunity to work from home on occasion but only for specific reasons such as an appointment or severe weather (MN winters!). I would love to know if there are others out there who have suggestions or have homeschooled with circumstances like mine. Thank you.”

This question has been a recurring one lately on this homeschooling blog, both via my inbox and in the comments. Has anyone walked in Rebecca’s shoes? What advice can you offer?
